Washington, D.C., March 8, 2012 – A legend of Washington real estate, who from behind the scenes produced some of this region’s most visible buildings as well as two more generations of family members hyperactive in his business, died Tuesday at 94.
Albert Abramson, known universally as Sonny since his mom nicknamed him as a kid, was a GW Law grad, WW2 Army captain, and devoted family man who came into the office every day well into his 90s. We took this picture of him in 2008 at the opening of 2000 Tower Oaks in Rockville, surrounded by family members Gary, Pennie, Marnie, Brian, and Jeffrey Abramson; Alex, Amanda, and Eric Posner; and Rona and Shari Abramson.
Also on hand was Sonny’s younger lifelong friend Ted Lerner, with whom he developed that award-winning building as well as White Flint Mall and landmark Washington Square on Connecticut Ave. in DC. Perhaps his proudest achievement was designing and building the US Holocaust Memorial Museum. The firm he founded in 1947 with a $500 investment, the Tower Companies, continues to be run by his family.
