Washington, D.C., February 12, 2013 - Lerner Enterprises, Washington, D.C.’s largest private real estate developer, and The Tower Companies, the largest Green Builders in the nation’s capital, both of Rockville, Maryland, are pleased to announce that Washington Square, the award-winning 1,000,000 square-foot landmark office building located at 1050 Connecticut Avenue, N.W. in the heart of Washington’s Central Business District, has earned Silver Certification under LEED® for Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance.  The LEED® Certification is awarded by the United States Green Building Counsel and recognizes excellence in building operating efficiencies and best of practices in sustainability.

LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification provides independent verification by the United States Green Building Counsel that a building was designed, built, or renovated using strategies aimed at achieving high performance in key areas of human and environmental health, such as sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

The Washington Square LEED® Certification project focused on improving efficiency and implementing green practices in the following areas:

Lerner and Tower are committed to maintaining sustainable business practices through the use of high-performance building materials, state-of-the-art technology and specialized construction techniques in order to minimize the impact to the environment.
