Washington, DC (May 1, 2019) — Lerner Enterprises, one of Washington, D.C.’s largest private real estate developers, and The Tower Companies, a Washington, D.C. based real estate developer and recognized sustainability leader, are pleased to announce that Washington Square has achieved LEED® Gold Certification using Arc Skoru, USGBC’s newest sustainability performance platform. Washington Square is a 1 million SF, award-winning landmark office building located at 1050 Connecticut Avenue and L Street, NW, which originally received LEED Silver Certified under LEED EBOM v2009.

“Achieving LEED certification is more than implementing sustainable practices. It represents a commitment to making the world a better place and influencing others to do better,” said Mahesh Ramanujam, president and CEO, USGBC. "Given the extraordinary importance of climate protection and the central role of the building industry in that effort, Lerner and Tower demonstrate their leadership through their LEED certification of Washington Square.”

In an effort to demonstrate their deeply-rooted commitment to energy efficiency and green building innovation, building owners Lerner and Tower, engaged the property management team at Washington Square to implement a variety of energy and water conservation measures. The building is also currently pursuing a Fitwell Certification.

“We are deeply committed to sustainability and are constantly looking for ways to improve our efforts,” stated Mark D. Lerner, a principal of Lerner. “Washington Square is a fixture in the DC market and we are pleased that the building has exceeded sustainability standards, thus achieving a higher LEED status," he added.

In 2008, the partner organizations worked together to achieve LEED Platinum Certification for their joint headquarters at 2000 Tower Oaks, being the first developers to do so for a multi-tenant commercial office building in the National Capital region.
